Sloppy Joe Salad Dressing

Sometimes you need to make dinner on the fly, literally making due with what you have.  This Russian dressing uses canned sloppy Joe sauce as its base.Homemade Russian Salad dressing made from Manwich sloppy Joe sauceI am a huge fan of making do.  I don’t like to have to rush off to the grocery store at the last minute because I forgot to pick up all of the ingredients I need.  That may stem from the days when I had four children under five with three in diapers.  Taking that crew shopping was enough to scar me for life!  At that point in my life, if I didn’t have what I needed, it was too bad for everyone.

Nowadays, my youngest is nine and the other four older boys are either out of the house or lost in their late teenage worlds.  I could shop any time, but I’d rather just do one big trip a week.  If I forget something, it is still too bad (why do I want to say “so sad” after too bad?). So when I wanted to make a homemade Russian salad dressing and all I had was a can of Manwich, well…you can see where this went.  Actually, the results were fantastic, so everyone was happy.Homemade Russian Salad dressing made from Manwich sloppy Joe sauce

  1. The most I ever had in diapers at once were two (and that was short lived with three under five). It gave me a hearty appreciation of NOT needing to go to the store extra times. Even just taking my 2 and 4 year old can be exhausting. I never would have thought to make a dressing out of a can of sloppy joe mix.

  2. I barely go to the store these days, which actually stinks. I hate sending hubs, but I’ve been too sick to go. It’s funny how you miss it. I went in for the first time in about a month or two, and it was like being a little kid going in there for the first time. I picked every single thing up, spent way too much money and had WAY too much fun. When I go normally it’s once a week like you. I hate going daily, they aren’t used to it here so they look at you like you’re nuts. Ha.

I love this recipe Kristen. You know how much I love sloppy joe’s so this is such a cool spin off. I’m going to try it with yogurt. Can’t eat mayo, boo for me, I know. Ha. I’m thinking this would be cool over a sloppy joe casserole too. Or just as a sauce for sloppy joe’s. My mind is spinning now.

    1. I’d say it would last up to one week, maybe ten days, as long as you refrigerate it all the time. It would probably be delicious on chicken as a marinade!
