German Chocolate Breakfast Oatmeal

German Chocolate Oatmeal #breakfast

After making Blueberry Cheesecake Oatmeal, I started thinking about what other desserts could be made into a healthy oatmeal breakfast.  How can you eat dessert for breakfast you ask?  Well, my reckoning is, if my sons can put 1/4 cup of maple syrup OR MORE on their pancakes, what exactly is the difference between dessert and breakfast?  At least oatmeal is good for your heart!  And cocoa may also decrease blood pressure and improve cholesterol.  Along with Omega-3s in the walnuts, this stuff is looking better and better!

When I am making up a recipe, I work one of two ways.  Either I sit down with pen and paper to map out the recipe before I begin or I wing it.  This was a wing-it kind of dish.  I gathered my ingredients, added them to the pan, jotting down as I went.  It has your basic German Chocolate ingredients: chocolate, coconut and walnuts plus enough stuff to make it a bowl of good hearty oatmeal, too.

  1. This sounds nice, but why do you think its German? Traditionally, no German would use coconut for example…and sorry, but I dont know one single German eating oatmeal in such a way (its more the British way). A German would use oatmeal for Müsli (breakfast cereals), but would not cook it.

    Greets from Germany:-)

    1. Hello,
This oatmeal is in the style of a German Chocolate Cake, that was originally called a German’s Chocolate Cake. It was named for an American chocolate maker named Sam German. It is a chocolate cake with a coconut and walnut frosting. I am sorry for the confusion, but it is not meant to be from the country Germany.

      1. Hello Kristen,

thanks for that really interesting explanation – I nearly thought Im a bad German who does not know how to behave right;-) But now I can do this dish without worrying about its source^^
